What to expect at Installation

We do this every day but we understand this is a first for a lot of homeowners! We want to let you know what you can expect when we install and maybe even answer some of the “why’s”.

  • We cut out all holes for faucets, small accessories and top mount sinks on site at installation of to ensure the best placement and eliminate breakage (with top mount sinks this is due to the fact that the hole is bigger than an under mount therefore the stone is thinner on the back side of the countertops). All under mount sinks are cut out and polished at our facility.
  • We always install under mount sinks with special clips called Sink-its and seal them to the underside of your countertop with 100% silicone. The plumber will install and connect your faucets and plumbing.
  • With top mount sinks we check the cut out for a good fit and the plumber will seal it to the countertop as well as install your faucets
  • We always use 100% silicone on the underside of your countertops to adhere them to your cabinets and along the walls where your backsplash meets the countertops.
We typically do not mount the dishwasher to your countertops. All dishwashers can be side mounted into the cabinetry and is up to the contractor, handy man, or homeowner to do so.
  • Installing a new countertop is a construction process, and some noise and dust should be expected. After the installation our installers will clean the immediate area and leave the job site in “broom-clean” condition. The countertops will then be sealed by our installers before we leave.

Countertop installation helpful checklist

Congratulations on the purchase of your new countertops! We have provided a simple checklist before we come template to ensure a smooth and easy installation process. Please note that countertops are usually installed at the end of any remodeling, so if you are purchasing new flooring, appliances or cabinets, those things should be purchased and/or installed first.

  • Before we template we more than likely need your old countertops removed. Don’t worry- we’ve got you covered and will assist you! If new cabinets are part of your remodel, they must be installed & leveled in their permanent position before we can template.
  • All fixtures (sinks, faucets, cooktops/ranges, tubs, soap dispensers, hot/cold water dispenser) must be at the job site on the day of templating. Apron or farmhouse sinks must be installed prior to the date of template.
  • We require a decision maker to be on site (unless other arrangements have been made) to approve the templates and make decisions regarding all pertinent details (such as overhang, corner styles, radius and bump-outs ) There are many small details to consider and we want to make sure you get exactly what you are expecting!
  • If after the template you want to view your layout on the slab(s) an appointment will need to be made beforehand and within 1-2 days after template. We encourage this with granite that has a lot of movement and/or if you have a large Island and want to showcase a particular part of the slab.

A template is what we use to fabricate your countertops and the most important part of the process. Any changes made after template that affect our dimensions may not only change the price, but also cause an extended delay in fabrication and installation. Please call us within 24 hours after template if there needs to be any changes made, as we may have to come out and re-template. There will be an additional charge for any additional trips unless prior arrangements have been made within the scope of the project. One the project has gone into production no changes will be allowed.

Are you doing a kitchen remodel or bathroom remodel?

You’re almost ready to get your new countertops and we are just as excited as you are! We do need your help in preparing for this big day so we can complete your installation. The following checklist will provide you with all the things that need to be done before we arrive.Countertop Template Checklist

  • Make sure cabinets are plumb, level, square and secured to the walls and/or floor. We will not install the new countertops on unleveled cabinets & if we are required to level them above normal circumstances we will discuss this with you before proceeding with the install & there could be an additional charge.
  • Cabinets that will rest on top of the countertop (appliance garage, etc.) must be installed after the new countertop is installed
  • For remodels using existing cabinets all countertops, backsplashes, sinks and cook tops need to be removed from cabinetry. We do offer removal and disposal of old countertops if you do not already have a source to do so.
  • Plumbing and electric/gas cook tops need to be disconnected. Since we do not specialize in these trades we cannot do any plumbing or electrical work. (We have several companies that we work regularly with and will coordinate with them on your behalf)
  • We recommend new tile backsplash should not be completed prior to countertop installation.
  • If you are going to keep your existing tile backsplash, then some cuts may need to be made to ensure your countertops fit underneath it
  • We require a decision maker there to approve all countertop details at installation day unless other arrangements have been made.
  • Remove all items from cabinets. Move all breakables, such lamps, vases, mirrors or any other valuables items from areas affected by installation.
  • Provide a clear path for the install team to bring in your countertops both inside and outside of the home or business.
  • We suggest scheduling a plumber and electrician for the day following installation so they can reconnect plumbing, install the faucets and connect any wiring as required. (If you use one of our recommended sources we will schedule with them on your behalf)
  • For safety, keep children and pets away from construction area.
  • If your project includes full backsplash out of the countertop material it is usually a two-part process to complete the installation. The full backsplash will be measured after the installation of the countertop. The backsplash will be installed approximately one week later. Upper cabinets and range hood/microwave combinations must be installed prior to measurement for the full backsplash. This process allows for the best fit. The material used for this process will be the same used to make the counter top, unless otherwise specified.

How to Measure Countertops

For us to give you an accurate quote we will need some basic measurements. If you are replacing your cabinets, usually the cabinet company will provide you with drawings.

If not that’s okay! We have provided a diagram and three simple steps to assist you in measuring your own counter tops. This enables us to give you a quick and accurate quote.

If you do not feel comfortable measuring yourself, we offer FREE in-home measuring. Just give us a call and we would be more than happy to schedule a time to come out!

Step 1:

Grab a pencil, paper, measuring tape and/or ruler.
Step 2:

Roughly draw the shape of your countertop space. Your drawing does not need to be to scale. (See the Measuring Guide as an example below.)
Step 3:

Using your tape measure, measure in inches the dimensions of all the countertop space you would like surfaced. Put the measurements on your rough drawing as you go.

  • Please indicate the approximate location of any required cutouts for sinks & stoves.
  • Note the locations of appliances and walls.
  • Note what type of stove you will be using. (Free Standing, Cooktop, or Slide In)

Measuring Guide

How much do granite or quartz countertops cost?

Every project is unique and that is why we customize all of our quotes to fit your needs and budget! Pricing varies depending on the complexity of your project, the type of stone required, the edging design selected, the number and type of sinks, faucets and cook tops used, the removal of existing countertops. We offer many affordable selections and it takes no time at all to give you a quote when we have the right details.

How long will it take to get my countertops?

We work around your schedule to get your countertops installed as quickly as possible. After all your selections have been made, and after we template you can usually expect your countertops within 5-7 days. Sometimes sooner depending on the size of the project!

Will you disconnect or reconnect my plumbing/ electrical?

Because we are not licensed plumbers or electricians we cannot offer this service. We like to stick to what we are good at to provide you with the best level of service! We do work several companies regularly on all of our projects that we coordinate with on your behalf to make your project run smoothly and efficiently.

Can I cut on my granite countertop?

That depends on the granite you select and only if you want to ruin your good knives! Most granite is harder than your knife blades and will dull them very quickly, if you use the countertop as a cutting surface. Always cut and chop on a wooden or plastic cutting board. We never recommend cutting on marble surfaces as it is prone to scratching.

Will natural stone stain?

It depends on the stone you select but in short, yes it can. Granite is the best countertop and least resistant to staining and more than likely will not. Marble is more prone to staining. Sealer helps prevent staining but, but we do recommend wiping up spills immediately. Serious stains can be almost completely removed and any etching can be resurfaced if either is truly bothersome to you. Read here for info on stone stain removal!

Can natural stone countertops be repaired?

Yes. If minor damage does occur, natural stone usually can be repaired using a mix of epoxy and ground-up chips of stone. If your countertop is severely damaged or cracked, it may need to be replaced. Consult your stone installer regarding repairs.

How does Edge Stoneworks handle seams?

By combining superior cutting and forming equipment with meticulous, well trained installers, Edge Stoneworks provides the cleanest seams available from a stone fabricator.

While we work to minimize the number of seams required for your project, we will be happy to show you the best location of the seams for your project. Additionally, our fabrication process makes it possible to match the natural patterns of the stone, minimizing the appearance of the seam(s).

Does natural stone or quartz add value to my home?

Yes. Stone surfaces in your home will always add more resale value than any other surfacing material. Stone and quartz countertops are very desirable to homebuyers, especially throughout the kitchen. Stone countertops will last a lifetime, which means that after the cost of the initial installation (with proper maintenance and care) they never need to be replaced.

What are remnants? Can I buy remnants for small projects?

Remnants are smaller pieces of stone or smaller sections of slabs remaining from another project. Most fabricators and suppliers sell remnants and sometimes offer price discounts on leftover pieces. You cannot special order remnants – what you see is what you get. Remnants work great if you only need a small portion of stone for a bathroom vanity, shelving, a laundry room, window sills or for small desks and tables.

Can I use a natural stone surface outdoors exposed to the elements?

Yes. Outdoor countertops add a beautiful complement to pool areas, decks, and patios but require more maintenance; especially in regions like ours with seasonal changes. When considering natural stone for outdoor countertops, be sure to select a hard stone. Some types of stone are softer than others and will weather and stain easier. We will be happy to make sure you are selecting the best stone for your outdoor application!

Care & Maintenence

Routine Care

Granite, Marble and Natural Stone should be cleaned with water and a non-abrasive, mild, PH-neutral soap such as dish soap (like Dawn, Ivory, etc.) or a cleaner specially formulated for stone. We offer an amazing cleaner available for sale in our showroom that cleans, polishes and protects your countertops. ***Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids.

When using the water and soap method, apply with a soft cloth and warm water. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.

Sealing
Edge Stoneworks seals all stone countertops with a sealer after the installation of your granite. This sealant penetrates the material and creates a barrier against most of the tiny openings present in the stone. The sealant will not change the color of polished stones. We recommend that most stones be resealed every year 2-5 years depending on use and the type of stone. When using our recommended cleaner you can extend the need to reseal your countertops.

Staining
While granite is highly resistant to staining, substances such as oil, grease, and any acidic or pigmented material can stain some granites and many marbles and travertine if not removed immediately.

Using paper towels, or other disposable cloths, instead of a sponge or rag during regular cleansing will help reduce the spread of remnant oil, acid or bacteria. If a spill occurs, blot the spill with a paper towel immediately. Don’t wipe the area, it will spread the spill. Flush the area with plain water and mild soap and rinse several times.

Dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat as necessary.
Substances to Avoid

While some substances may stain stone if left on the surface for a period of time (such as cooking grease, lemon juice, or wine) there are some materials that are more dangerous to your countertops and should be completely avoided. Avoid use off these chemicals: paint removers, hydrochloric acid, ammonia, and degreasers. The use of these products will cause the polish to fade or etch. Certain construction adhesives (plumber’s putty, painter’s putty, etc.) will permanently stain your natural stone.
